Mares are the cornerstone of our program. They do far more than carry and raise a foal—they shape the foundation of who that young horse will become. A good mare teaches patience, respect, confidence, and manners from the very beginning, guiding her foal in how to interact within the herd and how to respond appropriately to people. Her temperament, wisdom, and steady influence are reflected in the foals she raises, making her value impossible to measure. A truly exceptional mare is worth her weight in gold, and we believe the strength of any breeding program begins with the mares behind it.
All of our mares are registered with either AQHA or APHA. If you click on their papers it will bring you to allbreedpedigree.com where you can view their complete lineage. They will all be bred to Steel for a 2027 foal unless otherwise noted.
Sandy – VH COOSEGON 2001 APHA Palomino Mare
Sandy holds a very special place in our hearts and in the history of our program. She was purchased out of a kill pen in 2015 while in foal with Zipped My Scotch, also known as Virginia, and from the moment she arrived, she became an important part of our foundation. Over the years, Sandy has served as the matriarch of our program, producing several beautiful foals and leaving a lasting mark through the daughters she has given us. Three of her fillies are now part of our breeding program as well, continuing her legacy into the next generation. Today, Sandy is retired from breeding, but her job is far from over. She now lives with the youngstock, where she continues to teach them how to be respectful, confident, well-mannered horses within the herd.
Virginia – ZIPPED MY SCOTCH 2016 APHA Bay Mare
Virginia is one of Sandy’s (VH Coosegon) lasting legacies and has become a treasured mare in our program in her own right. She was born after Sandy came to us from the kill pen, and we were fortunate to obtain the breeder’s certificate and complete her registration. From the start, Virginia proved to be exceptionally easy to work with. She was willing, sensible, and straightforward in her training, and although she was never fully finished under saddle, she has always had the kind of mind and disposition that would make it easy for her to return to riding with the right time and consistency. That same trainability and quiet, willing nature are qualities she passes along to her foals. Virginia has become one of our best producers, consistently giving us several nice colts over the years, and her first filly has earned a place in our keeper pen to carry her influence forward.
Tilly – NEED TO BREATHE 2019 APHA Dunskin Mare
Tilly was truly a dream come true and will always be special to me as the result of my first experience breeding through artificial insemination. From the moment she arrived, she was everything I had hoped for—easy to handle, willing, kind, and sensible as a foal. As she has matured, she has continued to impress us with her steady temperament, trainability, and willing attitude in everything she does. Tilly has now proven herself as a producer as well, giving us incredible foals that carry forward so many of the qualities we value most in her. She consistently passes on her easygoing nature, good mind, and striking dun factor, making her an exciting and important mare in our program.
Jo – UWRF OUTLAWJOSIEWHIZ 2010 AQHA Buckskin Mare
Jo brings my favorite bloodlines to the heart of my breeding program, and she has proven to be an excellent addition in every way. As a granddaughter of Hollywood Dun It and a great-granddaughter of Topsail Whiz, she carries the kind of pedigree I have always admired and wanted to build on. Her foals are already showing exactly why those bloodlines are so valued. They are easy to work with, sensible, and thoughtful, with the kind of minds that pause and think before they react. Jo has added strength, quality, and consistency to our program, along with the bonus of beautiful color. Adding her to the herd has truly been a dream come true, and she continues to prove her value through every foal she produces.
Babe – BABES ONE LOVE 2001 AQHA Bay Mare
Babe was another special find from a kill pen, and we are grateful she found her way into our program. She carries amazing NCHA bloodlines with every horse on her papers being a producer including herself. Even though she came to us later in life, she has still blessed us with a few very nice foals. Babe has proven that quality does not fade with age, and her foals reflect the strength, substance, and pedigree she brings to the herd. She is a mare we are thankful to have had the opportunity to own and include in our breeding program. She is currently not in foal.
Fire – MP GENUINE DUN WHIZ 2021 AQHA Dun Mare
Fire holds a very special place in my breeding program as the first foal by my own stallion, Steel. From the beginning, she has impressed me with her exceptional talent and the qualities that make her an exciting addition to my broodmare band. Her pedigree carries impeccable NCHA bloodlines, with every horse on her dam’s side being a producer. I am thrilled for her next chapter: Fire is currently in foal to Chex Out My Steps for a highly anticipated 2027 foal.
Selene – LENAS DYNAMITE TWIST 2017 APHA Bay Tobiano Mare
I was blessed with the opportunity to purchase Selene from her breeder in MT. From the moment we had her shipped home, she has been an absolute delight. She settled in beautifully and quickly showed us the kind, willing nature that makes her so easy to love. There is not a mean bone in her body, and she truly seems to enjoy everyone she meets. Selene brings a gentle presence to the herd, along with the qualities we are excited to see she is passing on to her foals. We are hopeful she will give us a dun tobiano filly to retain for our program in the future.
Lucy – MP COOSA MADE BY FAME 2021 Dun Mare
Lucy is a full sister to Tilly and has many of the same qualities we value so much in our program. She was started under saddle and proved to be easy and willing for the trainer, showing the kind of sensible mind we hope to see carried forward. Lucy entered the broodmare band with her first foal in 2025, and from day one, he had the friendly, in-your-pocket personality we love to see. We are excited to watch Lucy continue to prove herself as a producer in the years ahead.
Fiona – MP STEELNDREAMS 2023 Dunalino Mare
Fiona is an exceptional mare and the first foal out of Tilly, who was the first foal I bred and raised in my program. With her outstanding conformation, intelligence, willing disposition, and readiness to try anything asked of her, Fiona has all the qualities of a versatile and rewarding partner. Her genetics make her especially remarkable: she is homozygous for dun, ensuring she will pass a dun allele to every foal, and she also carries cream, offering exciting color possibilities when thoughtfully matched. Combining beauty, balance, temperament, and highly desirable genetics, Fiona is truly a breeder’s dream come true and a promising continuation of a carefully nurtured family legacy. We are anticipating breeding her to a homozygous tobiano stallion in 2027.
